Hi Pierpaolo!

I really loved experimenting with different materials when creating cubes and was particularly drawn to using balloons to transform 2D squares into 3D cubes by forming the space between the planes - with the metal squares acting as a tension on the balloon and causing it to form interesting organic shapes (influenced by imagery of obesity). I then developed this idea from "cube" into "room" when looking at the space in between the pipes of the room - as if the pipes were compressing the space into the room - echoing the tension explored in "cube". I liked contrasting the light nature assumed of a balloon and recreating it using denser materials such as plaster and sweets (the exploration with sweets stemming from research I carried out trying to quantify fat in cubic volumes) - making the forms ambiguous and tactile (influenced especially by the works of Louise Bourgeois, Lynda Benglis and Alina Szapocznikow). I felt that trapped within these pipes on the floor, the forms gained character - like living beings being restrained.

Hope you had an amazing Christmas and New Year!
Emily Motto
