room project

The thing about this piece is that the sound of it is crucial so a photo doesn't quite do it in terms of getting the full experience.  Essentially, it is a hollow clay circle(about a foot in diameter) filled with water.  Inside there's a small electric pump which keeps the water constantly circulating.  You can hear it sort of gurgling as the water rushes through.
I came up with this concept when we had the opportunity to get some background information on the building and neighborhood.  The fact that, beneath the streets and buildings, theres a river constantly flowing, really intrigued me.  This idea of an underlying currant, of an invisible constant which never enters into our topical perception, our everyday experience, and yet, i think, on some level is an intrinsic part of it, really appealed to me.  So the actual object is quite crude in appearance, heavy and motionless-looking but, through the sound of the water,  our perception of it is altered by the fact that we know, even though we never see, that there is movement inside of it.
